So Day One on The Keto Experiment and like a typical Monday Morning for us … Frantic.

We were off this morning to get some blood tests and we were told to fast from midnight the night before.  Of course we spent our Sunday eating burgers and drinking booze as we cleaned out our cupboard of all things nasty. There might have been a little more alcohol than food involved to be honest…but well…. it was our last day on our usual diet and we are only human.

We woke up pretty hungry because of the “wine for dinner” scenario the night before but more for me it was more about not having a coffee because we had to fast for these blood tests. I’m not a big coffee drinker but I need it first thing! Just a few steaming mouthfuls of black coffee… no sugar to get me moving in the morning.

So being the official day one we had a lot planned for the day – The Blood Tests – The Dexa Scan – Grocery Shopping… But before any of that could happen…. We needed to take our “Before shots”..

Scary.

Taking pics standing in skin tight clothes with pale skin and bed hair… not the best look and you don’t need to know how we were feeling – its written all over our faces! The only thing keeping the slightest smile on our faces is thinking about seeing the after shots after the 8 week Keto Experiment.

So it’s off to Pathology. We had perked up a bit since we woke up ( even without our usual caffeine hit ) so we walked.  We knew we were in for at least a few hours of testing so better to take the opportunity to walk instead of looking for a long term car park spot.

We were tested for everything.  So much blood to be taken. The Pathology nurse actually saying “You guys are in for a Doozy today” The biggest test was the two hour blood glucose test which basically involves taking blood then drinking a Glucose drink ( Dec loved it… it was sugar… I still wanted coffee!! ) and then being tested again an hour later… then having another rest and back for the third lot of blood tests. By the end of it I felt like a pin cushion. We were fortunate that the Pathology Nurse was exceptionally lovely and entertaining and keep us informed during the entire process.

By this time of the day it’s midday and we still hadn’t eaten a thing except for the few mouthfuls of Glucose water at Pathology. We were both pretty hungry by this stage so we headed home and had Bacon and Eggs – So “Keto”.  Dec mentioned toast at least 4 times…. I just ignored him.

Then off to get a Dexa Scan – You can read more about the Dexa Scan results and the process when I post them later in the week. All I can say now is that this was the first of I’m sure many things that have really opened our eyes to our health situation…. And it wasn’t pretty!

On our way to get the scan Dec hit the wall.

I looked over to him in the car and his entire body was shaking. He was sweating and pale and I was actually concerned. Obviously the fact that we had fasted the night before and all morning, we had more blood than the bottle of wine we had shared the night before taken out of us and the lack of sugar had hit him hard. To be honest I wasn’t feeling that great either… but nothing like Dec. Keep in mind that by midday most days Declan has usually had at least 3 cans of Coke and a greasy fried breakfast so he was clearly suffering withdrawal. We simply had to stop to get him some sugar and decided that was the best thing to do. A quick snickers and a few fruity mento’s later and he was starting to feel himself again.

We are more than aware that we will suffer some withdrawal symptoms and we will share all of those details in the blog. And we won’t just grab the first snickers when we have a moment but today given the circumstances and Dec’s reaction we caved. So day one really wasn’t 100% Keto… but happy to say that after the Snickers we both enjoyed a no carb dinner! With no wine…
