Short for Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry, DEXA or DXA is the scientific gold standard method for assessing body composition and bone density screening.
DEXA is the only tool available for bone density and it is also the only method that will measure exact bone, fat and lean tissue content as opposed to an estimation.
We wanted to monitor exactly what was happening with our body composition during the Keto Experiment so the only way to do this accurately was with DEXA.
I don’t know why more people don’t do this to be honest. Is it because they haven’t heard about it? Or don’t realise how valuable it can be? This is the only way to see what is really going on inside your body.
Much better than the scales – which personally I am obsessed with – but the scales can change literally within hours depending on how much you have eaten – what you have consumed in water – and how many times you’ve been to the toilet! I’ve actually tested this many times. I know my record is a loss of nearly half a kilo from just going to the loo…. so the scales really aren’t an accurate measurement of what is happening in your body.
Even looks can be deceiving. We are working with Kate at K8 Body Scan and even Kate will tell you this. A lot of skinny people are devoid of lean muscle mass which is critical to your health and a lot of larger people have lots of muscle and a low amounts of body fat. You just don’t know until you get a DEXA Scan.
So off we went to see Kate. She is located at the Carlton Footy Grounds in Melbourne and easy to find. Kate will welcome you like you are one of her Family and take you through the process. If you haven’t had a DEXA Scan before it can seem quiet daunting as you are welcomed by a large machine and wonder exactly how it can see inside you and measure what’s happening in your insides – but after a quick conversation with Kate about what to expect and how the scan will work you are left feeling more than comfortable with the process which actually doesn’t take very long at all.
Once you are positioned on the DEXA Scan bed – Kate will start the scan and she will sit with you to explain everything that is happening. Kate talks about how the scan works – the very safe radiation levels and what we can expect to see in the results. All in all the scan itself only take between 12 – 16 minutes! Dec even had a little snooze during his scan!
Then it’s the results. Kate has been doing this for a while now and when she was explaining the results to us I found her not only to be really knowledgeable about our body and composition but non-judgemental about the results ( some of us are “fatter” than others ) which made it more comfortable for us and she will even crack a little joke with you.
I don’t know what we were really expecting from the results. Up until now we have only really heard about the average body fat percentage you should strive for ( Men between 10% to 20% and Woman between 20% – 30% ) I always take these “averages” with a grain of salt though because each of us is different but it’s a good indication of where you should to try be.
We hear a lot about Visceral Fat… That’s the fat around your belly that hangs around your vital organs like your liver pancreas and intestines basically making it hard for them to perform and if you have a lot of this visceral fat you have increased risk of health problems – namely type 2 diabetes.
In the DEXA Scan they measure the visceral fat and classify it as the “Android region” Basically the Android region is mainly the region around the trunk of the body.
After only one session with Kate at K8 Body Scan I’m not declaring myself an expert and whilst I did learn so much whilst I was there its always best to go and get your own DEXA Scan and talk to the experts about your results.
So the results….. The starting point! The Scan itself you can download in detail below but the main areas we are focusing on are highlighted in the below table. These are the things that we get! We get Body Fat in Kilos and Percentages and that’s what we are focussing on. Of course it’s not all doom and gloom. I was told that I have perfectly symmetrical legs and my bone density is extremely good…. Really good in fact.. I’m sure Kate’s words were “They would need to run over you with a steam roller to break one of your bones” and I always knew I had great legs!
On a more serious note there is a lot more body fat on us both than what we expected. I carry mine rather evenly across my body which you can see from the Android ( Trunk region ) to Gynoid (Hips thighs breasts) ratio. So whilst there is a lot of actual body fat – its distributed quiet evenly.
Dec on the hand is carrying a lot of his fat in that Android region. A huge 52.6% in that area. That really important area where all your vital organs are. That area that if covered in fat can cause major health issues! Yes that area! The Beer Gut… The Fuel tank for a Sex Machine.. Not anymore.. this is the serious area – The Visceral Fat!
So we now know exactly where we have started. Based on what we have read about low carb eating and what happens when you go in to Ketosis we are hoping that our body will start to use that excess body fat as fuel and start to burn it all away. Following a Keto way of eating as we are for the Keto Experiment will show how much fat we have been able to burn from the regions during the 8 weeks. It will be really interesting to see what happens.
Here are our results – DEXA Scan performed on Day 1 of the Keto Experiment at K8 Body Scan.
|BODY FAT PERCENTAGE||46.10%|
|BODY FAT PERCENTAGE||35.00%|
